Liquid Laundry Soap

When I went to do laundry this morning I realized I was almost out of laundry soap…so let’s make some!

We started making our laundry soap a couple years ago after discovering all the things in store bought brands. After some searching we landed on a soap nut laundry soap. It’s a very mild and gentle soap, the nuts can be used in the garden/yard after using to make the soap, and they have no smell.

Ingredients
  • 1 oz Soap Nuts
  • 2 cup Water
  • 1/2 cup Vinegar
  • 20-25 drop Essnetial Oil (*Optional*)
  • 1 Sealable container (Repurpose a wine bottle, liquor bottle, or other contianer that is easy to pour from)

    Measure out 1 oz of soap nuts in a pan
  2. 2
    Add 2 cups of water in a pan.
  3. 3
    Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer and cover. Simmer for an hour or until the soap nuts turn to a lighter color.

    Once simmered, turn off the heat and allow them to cool slightly.

    Strain the soap nuts into another container.

    *Optional Step* Use the discarded nut berries to repel unwanted insects away from your garden or other areas of your yard. We have not tried giving these to our chickens...we have found conflicting information online if its safe.

    Measure out 1/2 cup of vinegar. Add vinegar to the container with the soap nut mixture.

    *Optional step* Add 20-25 drops of essential oil with the soap nut and vinegar mixture. Note that the essential oil scent is very mild.

    Add mixture to a sealable container and its ready to use. Add 2-4 Tbsp per load of laundry.
Note

We recommend using the liquid laundry soap within four weeks, but it can last up to 6 weeks.  You will notice a sour smell once it has expired.  
We keep ours in the cabinet above our washing machine; however, to extend the life you can store it in the fridge.  
This recipe is low sudsing and can be used with HE laundry machine.
This natural laundry soap will make your clothes smell clean - aka no smell :) It will not have the same strong smell of fragrance that store brands have, even if you add essential oils.  
Soap nuts are NOT nuts, they are berries.
